I went on a canoe trip on the weekend. A group of us went down a small portion the Tusket River. We put in near Barrio Lake (N44 12.587 W65 48.114) and came out at the plantation (N44 08.287 W65 50.584) where Whistler Brook empties into the Tusket. The run is about 12 kms long. There were lots of birds singing. The most common of them was the Black Throated Blue warbler. Spring firsts for me were the Least Flycatcher and Chestnut Sided Warbler (only heard a couple). A pair of Canada Geese took off Sunday morning while we were eating breakfast. I seen a small duck take off out of the trees, which I wasn't sure about. It looked like it's legs were at the back of it's body. There was an Osprey on a nest (N44 10.454 W65 51.265) and 4 Spotted Sandpipers that stayed ahead of us towards the end of the run. There were a few Tree Swallows in spots, but not the amount I was expecting. Heard a Swainson's Thrush at our camping spot. Did not hear any owls. I wish I could have been in the bow with my binoculars instead. Paul Gould Quinan, NS
