I have been able to do only partial owl surveys this year, as all 3 have
been cancelled partway through due to high winds. Pat McKay and I heard one
NSWO singing on the first 4 stops of our Earltown route (Truro area),
despite the poor listening conditions due to wind.

We also did some Atlas owling up the Eastern shore in April, in squares east
of Sheet Harbour. Easily found 2 NSWOs singing 3 kms apart in one square,
and got single NSWOs in 2 other squares. They seem abundant there this
year. I haven't been owling there in the past, to know whether these are
typical numbers.

One factor to keep in mind is that this has been an early spring in various
parts of the province, and male NSWOs stop calling once they find a mate.
The calling that we use to judge population densities actually reflects
failed breeding attempts, at least to the date when heard. It could
conceivably be that this is an unusually successful breeding season for
NSWOs.
