Hi all
Spring has come and birds and plants are becoming much more obvious. The =
Pictou Co. Naturalists has two interesting programs in May and there is =
also a notice for the annual Nova Scotia Spring Migration Bird Count. =
All these programs provide a means of citizens helping to monitor =
changes in nature.=20
On Tues. May 5,=20
Measuring Atlantic Canada's Bird Populations - Becky Stewart , =
Co-ordinator for the current Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas will =
illustrate the status and abundance of some species which are in =
alarming decline and others which are increasing as the early results of =
the current atlas are discussed at the May 5 meeting of the Pictou Co. =
Naturalists at the New Glasgow Library Program Room at 7 p.m. Birds are =
great indicators of our ecosystem health. Learn how you can contribute =
to the current atlas with your observations as all are welcome. Here is =
a link to the atlas website- http://www.mba-aom.ca/

On Sat. May 9
Our 20th annual Nova Scotia Migration Count(NSMC), will be held this =
year on May 9, as always on the second Saturday of May. The Nova Scotia =
Migration Count Website is http://www.hanstoom.com/NSMC.html and =
provides everything you'll need to participate in this year's count, =
including county and individual checklists. I will send out more details =
later this week. Participate in the annual Nova Scotia Migration Bird =
Count as either a field or feeder watcher.

On Mon. May 25
An additional May meeting will be held MONDAY May 25 at 7 p.m. in the =
program room of the New Glasgow library. Please note the change from the =
usual day of the week. Guest speaker will be Melanie Priesnitz who will =
speak on NOVA SCOTIA PLANTWATCH- Find out how to become citizen =
scientists and help us watch for signs of spring
Melanie Priesnitz is the Conservation Horticulturist at the Harriet =
Irving Botanical Gardens in Wolfville Nova Scoria. She has been working =
at the Gardens since the construction phase where she helped to plant =
over 17,000 plants that are native to the Acadian Forest Region. Melanie =
is Melanie is active in the community both through her role at the =
Gardens and as a volunteer in her spare time. Melanie is the Nova Scotia =
Coordinator for the national environmental monitoring program Plantwatch =
and is an active member of the Town of Wolfville's Communities in Bloom =
committee. Her latest personal conquest was graduating from an intensive =
certificate program on Applied Plant Conservation at the Denver =
Botanical Gardens in Colorado. Melanie enjoys sharing her knowledge of =
native plants and conservation with local schools, garden clubs and =
naturalist groups. The talk will explain what the Plantwatch program is =
all about and how folks can get involved. She will talk a little bit =
about climate change and how our flora is being affected and she will =
demonstrate some of the plant species which will be watched in detail. =
