I went down to Seaforth today to do a beached bird survey. On my way down through the Musquodoboit Valley, there were tree swallows everywhere, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, a male harrier, snipe winnowing, winter wrens, ruby-crowned kinglets, kingfishers, swamp sparrows and many other birds.
At Seaforth, I started my walk down behind the community center. In the wetlands just behind the center, there was a great egret kept company by a trio of great blue herons. I only brought my little point-and-shoot camera, so I only have some very distant ID shots.
A green-winged teal (the american version), three pairs of ring-necked ducks and a trio of greater yellowlegs were hanging out in the pond below the marsh. Common mergansers were just visible at the far edge of the pond. On the ocean, there were about 50 eiders scattered around, along with many double-crested cormorants, a surf scoter and two white-winged scoters.
This was my first time at this beach since the big wash-up of seal carcasses, and I found four in a 2 km stretch of beach. One was nearly intact except for ten circular holes of varying sizes scattered on its flank. The largest hole was about 2 cm across, the smallest maybe 0.25 cm. What might have caused these? I thought shot at first, but the holes are all different sizes. And wouldn't a gull or other scavenger make one hole and then work from there?
