It was a perfect night for a survey with calm, clear skies and a minimum of running water. En route to the stop we made a couple of stops and near the old Elgin cemetary we noted BLOODROOT in bud. Maybe the flowers had been open when the sun was still up. We arrived a few minutes early at our stop so we decided to go a little toward the Liscomb sanctuary to check on West Branch and Piper L. We had not gone very far ( Nancy's Cellar) when Charlie spotted an owl perched in a tree. We turned around and identified it as a Great Horned Owl and we watched it for awhile as it moved form tree-top to tree-top. A couple of Woodcock were heard so we hustled back to start our route. We heard Canada Geese fly in to the old dam at Lorne. On our survey we had 2 stops with single Barred Owls and 2 stops with single Great Horned Owls. We heard 3 Wilson's Snipe on the route and Wood frogs at about half the stops. Although we had heard peepers in Hopewell, we did not hear any along the owl route. Maybe the 0C temperature keep them from being active. We did not hear any Woodcock on the route either. Nice night to be out. Not sure whether we will be able to run the Tony Mills route as the start road is closed with a barrier for now. The road is a pretty horrible mud mess at the best of times. cheers Ken --Boundary_(ID_HkE9pchVKJwBKonAcfr4gA) Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> <META content="MSHTML 6.00.6000.16825" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton NS<BR>B0K 1S0<BR>902 752-7644<BR>Hi all</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Charlie Kendall, Rick Ferguson and I ran our second Nocturnal Owl Route tonight (April 20) from Lorne to Sheepherders Junction in Pictou Co.
