Good day, Wendy and I visited Belchers Marsh Park and little Belchers Pond today to carry out the annual repairs, replacement or cleaning out of the tree swallow boxes erected with the support of the Bird Society and the local Boy Scout troop last year. These wetlands are located on Parkland Drive in Clayton Park West in suburban Halifax. Unfortunately, although the swallows did arrive on time (early May) last year and seemed to be inspecting the boxes at one point, they never did stay to nest. However, a couple of the boxes were vandalized and one may have been used by another critter so some attention was required. We are hoping for more positive results this year! While we were there we did find a few spring visitors not present a couple of days ago, namely, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, giving a few brief songs (one I can still hear!), Belted Kingfisher, Red-winged Blackbird (not present this am but there in the afternoon!) and a new visitor to the Marsh, a Pied-billed Grebe! Song Sparrows are singing from every snag and a couple of White-throated Sparrows added to the chorus. Not sure how long the Spring Peepers have been active but a few were peeping in mid-afternoon. Cheers, Bob McDonald
