In response to James King, here in King's County in the Gaspereau  
River, the rainbow smelts run throughout April, while gaspereau  
(alias alewives) run in May and into June (but the commercial fishing  
for gaspereau stops at the end of May); and I believe shad then run a  
bit later.  I always used to get the dates of the smelt start and  
gaspereau start from Kevin Reid at his store just south of the  
Melanson bridge.
