APR. 4, 2009 - I checked on a BALD EAGLE NEST northwest of Waterville
(northeast of Berwick) on Mitchell Visser's York Point Farms property
(Mitchell's pig barn burned down a few years ago, and apparently now
he is a mink farmer). The road that goes near the nest is now gated,
and the track to the nest is washed out, but from the washout I could
see with binoculars that an adult eagle was indeed sitting on the
nest as if incubating eggs.

APR. 6, 2009 - At northeast Grand Pre I could not see any great blue
herons nor double-crested cormorants flying to/from their nests on
BOOT ISLAND. I also could not see the BALD EAGLE NEST there --
perhaps it has blown or fallen down over the winter?

However, this afternoon Luke DeCicco saw 3 GREAT BLUE HERONS in the
Grand Pre area.

I checked on 2 NEW BALD EAGLE NESTS, with help in finding them from
Bernard Forsythe. First, the nest to the south of Stirling's Farm
Market had an adult (female?) on the nest and her mate perched
conspicuously nearby in a dead tree. Second, the old red-tailed hawk
nest northeast of White Rock is now much larger and I could easily
see an adult eagle sitting on top of it (and presumably incubating);
this is the nest where Bernard thinks the eagles might be the White
Rock Pond pair, which this year is not using either of their two
alternate nests. Also, as far as we know, most or all of our locally
nesting eagles do not have alternate nest-sites.

The latter nest is at least the third local example of a red-tailed
hawk nest being taken over by bald eagles; the other two are the
Canard nest and the Eye Road nest just east of Wolfville.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
