28 March 2009 There was lots of bird song in the garden this morning, including a Fox Sparrow singing. Martine and I walked the Granite Springs Golf Course in Bayside, and in addition to previously mentioned spring returnees (juncos, robins, grackles, etc.) we had a singing Purple Finch, territorial Northern Flickers, a couple of Evening Grosbeaks flying past (likely migrating), a strutting male Ruffed Grouse, courting chickadees and Golden-crowned Kinglets, and a Pileated Woodpecker. A perfect spring morning for a walk. We also noted a cloud of small flying insects above a snow patch. Would these be a type of Adelgid fly, similar to the ones we see in late autumn? And one final sign of spring for us -- Snowdrops were in bloom at home. Enjoy the spring weather. . .
