27 March 2009 Spring birds are returning to the Prospect area, though the Double-crested Cormorants have yet to return to their colony on Inner Gull Island (though the gulls staked out their territories on the island three weeks ago, as well as other islands in the area). Robins and grackles have returned, Fox Sparrows are passing through, but some winter birds are still present. Residents of the village of Prospect have reported a Short-eared Owl through the winter, though it has remained elusive whenever I've gone looking. The owl sailed through one person's yard two evenings ago. And the adult Lesser Black-backed Gull is still present -- I saw it at the inner NE end of Shad Bay this morning. But the greatest pleasure comes from all the breeding birds getting frisky -- Pine Siskins, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Mourning Doves, juncos, Song Sparrows. A cacophony of song every morning, and lots of theatrics during the day.
