Anne Hughes is visiting form Newfoundland and has reported some good birds =
to me from the Oakland area. She found a yellow-breasted chat at the first=
good feeder station on the curve on the Oakland Road. I don't know the ho=
use number=2C but it is at the location where two northern cardianals have =
been reliable for years now. I've had a lot of you to this particular feed=
er location before. Also=2C at Oakland she reports lots of purple finches.=
Other good birds that she observed were 60 Bohemian waxwings and at least=
three cedar waxwings with them. Also there were three American robins=2C =
which have grown scarce here in this area.

My first exciting sighting for the day was at East LaHave. Three juvenile =
eagles were at what I can only descibe as mortal combat. I'm not sure why =
they were acting as such=2C maybe for territory=2C or maybe there was a fem=
ale nearby. Maybe they were practicing some ritual that I'm not aware of.=
Maybe it was a power struggle for dominance or heriarchy. I don't know. =
Anyhow=2C they were chasing one another and attacking each other with out=
stretched claws and feathers were a flying.
=20
I afterwards went to Lower Rose Bay for another try for the male eastern to=
whee. Yesterday I went to the location for about an hour without success. =
Today=2C I was blessed with a great Christmas gift in seeing the towhee. =
My first one for 2008 and a nice addition to the winter list. I then decid=
ed that it would be a good day for some exercise and fresh air. By then th=
e temperatures had dropped way down and with the wind at Kingsburg it was b=
rutally cold. I had a nice refreshing walk on Kingsburg Beach and out to p=
art of Hells Point. Of note there were:
=20
14 bufflehead=2C two Iceland gulls=2C a black-headed gull and two Bonaparte=
gulls. Of course there were many other ducks and species about also. On =
the way back out just before dark the rough-legged hawk that is hanging in =
the area gave me great looks.
=20
I forgot to mention that on December 21 I had my first Iceland gulls for th=
is area at Lunenburg with two. They were late arriving this year.
=20
On the way back through Lower Rose Bay a nice falcon appeared and flew alon=
gside of the road. It perched in a tree for a short time before taking fli=
ght again. It was a peregrine falcon.
=20
At Riverport today there were 225 Canada Geese. For the past week there ha=
ve been between 178 and 210. I'll leave the subspecies of these birds to E=
ric Mills as he is more experienced=2C but today there were at least two se=
parate subspecies present=2C maybe even three. =20
