On Thursday, Dec.18th, I was interested to see a possible Cooper's Hawk
(immature), or maybe just a Sharp-shinned, chasing a Pileated Woodpecker
in the trees behind our house. The hawk was able to manoeuver though
the trees better than the woodpecker, and so came within inches of
catching it several times. The woodpecker would land on a tree, search
around for insects, then fly to another tree. If it had stayed put, I
think it would have been quite safe. The hawk kept trying, but as long
as I was able to see what was happening, it didn't catch the woodpecker,
but I haven't seen it since, so I don't know. A Sharp-shinned Hawk
(adult) took a pass through the backyard while all this was going on,
and a few minutes later Don saw 2 Sharp-shinneds, a large female and a male.

About the time they disappeared, the male Red-bellied Woodpecker, which
we have had since Nov. 5th, flew from the area out to a big Maple tree
next to the street. He had been hiding behind a tree-trunk all the
time! We haven't seen him since, either. Well, that was enough to
scare anybody!
