--Apple-Mail-25-1069567973 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The monthly meeting of the Blomidon Naturalists Society will be held on Monday, December 8, 2008 in room 241 of the Beveridge Arts Centre at Acadia University in Wolfville at 7:30 p.m. The main presentation will be Between Forest and Sky. Alberta has 128 active fire towers that are staffed during the spring and summer to keep a lookout for forest fires. Many of them are located in sites that have no electricity or running water. Sharon Stratton has spent the last seven summers at some of these remote locations working as a fire-tower observer. During times of extreme fire hazard, she spends 11 hours a day on lookout duty. She will be talking about her experiences and showing us some of the beautiful scenery that she has encounter while on the job. Sharon Stratton was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where she spent much of her time in the outdoors and with her pets. Her first career was as a veterinary technician, followed by 13 years with the daily newspaper in St. Catharines, spending the majority of her time in advertising sales. During these years she also trained and competed in hunter shows with her horses, as well as continuing to explore the Ontario forests through hiking and kayaking. She decided to pursue a university degree as her mid-life crisis, graduating from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a Minor in Genetics, at 41 years of age. After a brief stint as a neurochemistry lab technician in Omaha, Nebraska (where she had much more fun wildlife rehabbing 26 opossums) she relocated again to Calgary and, after five years of applications was finally accepted into the Alberta Sustainable Resources fire tower program. She now divides her time seasonally, spending summers at her fire tower in the foothills and, until this year, winters as a judicial assistant with the Calgary Courts.
