Not Attingwood as I posted late = at night. =20 James R. Hirtle East LaHave From: jrhbirder@hotmail.comTo: naturens@chebucto.ns.caSubject: [NatureNS] H= awk vs JaysDate: Wed=2C 22 Oct 2008 02:38:51 +0000 First off another red-bellied woodpecker showed up yesterday at Blockhouse.= This time a male. That makes four in this area that I now know of. One = at Mahone Bay=2C one at Blockhouse=2C and two in Lunenburg. I've had an int= eresting story about blue jays and a sharp-shinned hawk interaction. My re= portee says that every day for a week a sharp-shinned hawk has been trying = to apprehend jays at her feeder. The jays come to the feeder and wait for = the hawk. One jay diverts the hawk away from the feeder while the others c= ome in and enjoy a meal. The jays seem to return to the feeder oblivious t= o the hawk=2C which appears to be a juvenile. The hawk has not been succes= sful at all with any of the jays at the feeder over the past two weeks. Th= e blue jays every day have been defecating on the hawk. I know that fieldf= ares will do this (Nature Series on Birds by Attingwood)=2C and that this i= s a defensive mechanism in some other species of birds also=2C but I've not= heard of this in regards to blue jays. I've done a lot of looking and a l= ot of reading in regards to blue jays and cannot find any reference to this= defensive mechanism within that species. Therefore=2C is it possible that= this is a defensive mechanism developed within this small group of jays at= Riverport only=2C or is it a fact that nothing has been done in regards to= a study=2C as we have not witnessed or had the opportunity to observe this= trait in blue jays. It might in fact be very common and we do not know ab= out it due to lack of study of observations. If anyone else has any input = on this or knows of any studies being done with blue jays in this regard I = would very much like to know about it. James R.
