Hi all:
=20
Yesterday I went to Mahone Bay to see the red-bellied woodpecker there. It=
is a female and I watched as it flew away from me. I went down the to the=
street below where I had seen it and after a short time it flew back and l=
anded on a dead limb in the tree above me. I was just raising my binocs fo=
r a better view when someone started up a pump for a port a pottie on the b=
ack of his truck and off flew the woodpecker. =20
=20
Anyhow=2C I had a much more satisfying view of one of the two at 102 Duffer=
in Street in Lunenburg today. It was a male and the red on the back of the=
head was breath-taking. The reddish tinge to the breast was also very evi=
dent in this male. After looking for a while I was about ready to give up =
when I heard the distinct call for this species. I turned around and watch=
ed as it flew up from a lower street. It landed in the tree above 102 Duff=
erin giving a great view and then went down to the suet there for a feed. =
Pat was with me and also got a great view of the bird as the sun hit is jus=
t right to bring the colors to full. Of course I had the camera in the car=
and totally forgot to take advantage of such. Duh!
=20
Of note if anyone is in the area there was a possible varied thrush there t=
oday. I say possible as while I was watching for the red-bellies I saw a b=
ird fly into a tree across the road. There were tons of starlings and some=
American robins about=2C but this bird caught my eye right away as differe=
nt. I got a brief look only=2C and what I saw fit a varied thrush with the=
orange and blue color of this bird and the dark of the face. I saw the bi=
rd in Greenfield earlier in the year and am therefore familiar with what a =
varied thrush looks like. Anyhow=2C after a very brief look only the bird =
flew into another tree=2C which was a thick spruce and tons of other birds =
were present. I as a result was unable to relocate my bird to possitively =
say 100 percent that it was indeed a varied thrush. That is why I say poss=
ible only.
