AUG. 23, 2008 - This morning about 30 people participated in a NOVA
SCOTIA NATURE TRUST WALK in the WOLFVILLE WATERSHED NATURE RESERVE on
the South Mountain above Gaspereau. Lauren and Sally Jo? were there
for NSNT, and the walk was mainly led by Bernard Forsythe with myself
for back-up and comic relief! For flora, we were fortunate to have
Charlie Cron and Wendy & Bob McDonald from Halifax.

Today was Sunny and warm to hot, but a nice breeze in open areas was
nice.

Bernard pointed out the RED PINES that he planted back in 1956 when
he was 10 or in grade 10? Also nearby Bernard noticed some spruces
that "didn't look right" and might be planted NORWAY SPRUCE? (they
had hairy twigs like red or black spruce, but we didn't see any cones).

Besides lots of goldenrods and asters etc. in bloom, Bernard pointed
out fruiting PINK LADY'S-SLIPPERS, TUBERCLED ORCHIDS, and BROAD-
LEAVED HELLEBORINES (orchids) -- one of the latter was still in
bloom. Notable plants with berries included WITHEROD or wild raisin,
HOBBLEBUSH, WILD/FALSE LILY-OF-THE-VALLEY, GLOSSY BUCKTHORN (the
latter a nasty invasive alien species), etc.

Insects seen included a VICEROY butterfly, a small black-and-white
DAY-FLYING MOTH? (noted by Wendy M.), a black-yellow-black woolly-
bear CATERPILLAR OF A SPOTTED TUSSOCK MOTH, and two small green
caterpillars (one was an inchworm or measuring worm). Other insects
noted were oodles of WATER STRIDERS on the small reservoir just above
the "CEMENT DAM", on which was engraved "WOLFVILLE WATER WORKS, 1931".

At the end of the walk, Bernard led a few stalwart participants a bit
further to the "MUD DAM" and associated reservoir.

Birds seen included at least two active groups of "CFWs", which means
"confusing fall WARBLERS", many of which were black-throated green
warblers. And calling and flying RAVENS were abundant all along the
east side of Duncanson's Brook.

Bernard pointed out a PURPLE FINCH at the newly cleared parking lot.
And just west of there was a small mixed flock of about 10 BARN
SWALLOWS and 5 BANK SWALLOWS.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
