Hi Everyone; Fulton Lavender led a Shorebird trip today for the Halifax Field Naturalists. One of our stops was Shorebird Cove. Some birders may remember when this was called Smelly Cove. At the end of the private road, to the extreme right of the pond, a large, uniformly greyish brown Rail flew in and landed. Fulton is sure it's a Clapper Rail. Rich Peckham also got a look at this bird. They both had the impression of a slightly downcurved bill. Fulton and Ulli Hoeger walked over there and tried to flush it - but no luck. It just tucked itself in. Evening is a good time to look for Rails. Perhaps some of you may want to take a recording of the CLRA's call? Directions: Take Hwy #207 from Dartmouth, go past Lawrencetown to Three Fathom Harbour. Turn right onto the road leading to Three Fthm Hbr and then turn left about 1 km along. Follow this road past farms with horses and look for a private gated road on your right, just past an inlet of the Harbour. You can walk around the wooden rail gate easily and down the dirt road. Shorebird Cove is at the end of this dirt road. Cheers; Suzanne __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
