My Mother refused to cook them but my Grandmother would poach them in milk with parley sauce. The congers brought back many memories. Although the war brought hardship to millions, there was sometimes unexpected bounty. I lived a few yards from the North Sea beach and was then, and still am, an inveterate beach comber. Having never even seen a grapefruit at the age of 7, the sea one morning delivered hundreds of cases from a sunken ship. We ate them until we got sick. We would also see lots of sea mammals and fish killed by either exploding mines or depth charges. For reasons that I did not understand then but think I understand now, a disproportionate number of huge conger eels washed up. Most of the offshore explosions occurred from exploding mines which were moored in shallow water. I believe that the eels saw these moorings as a perfect habitat but that also put them in the line of fire when the mine went off. Apologies for the reminiscing but not much to do on a rainy afternoon.
