We have just returned from 4 days at our cabin on Brier. Mostly we just saw
FOG. Actually, for those who know where we are, we only saw the other side
of Pond Cove for about an hour one night, and most of the time never even
saw the water. However, the weather did clear during 2 evenings, only on the
west side of the island, enabling us to enjoy the sunshine around Seal Cove
and Peajack Cove for brief periods. There were a few Willets, Gr. Yellowlegs
and S-B Dowitchers in Westport Harbor, and we didn't see any shorebirds at
Pond Cove, even though we walked the beach side and the pond side.

As expected, C.Yellowthroats, Wh-throated Sparrows and Robins were in
evidence, and there were Savannah Sparrows all over. There were lots of
C.Eider ducklings. There was a flock of 50+ W-W Crossbills that seemed to
travel all over the island (? several flocks) and a solitary male Red
Crossbill. There was a single adult F. plumaged N.Harrier. A pair of
Merlins were screeching and acting territorially right by Eric Mills' camp
yesterday at dusk, but that was the only time we heard or saw them. The
other surprise was the number of Swaibnson's Thrushes that were singing -
seemed abundant around our end of the island.

However, the wildflowers made up for the lack of birds and the fog, and we
spent a lot of time looking at, and trying to ID, many species.

On a bad note, one evening we heard a lot of shots in the fog from the
direction of Pond Cove, and when we walked around the next day, there were 2
dead Gray Seals, so I wonder f they were the targets.
