Hi Jeannie,

2008_0709wildlife0004 is one of the most beautiful of our tiger moths
(family Arctiidae), the St. Lawrence Tiger Moth (Platarctia parthenos
Harr.). The larvae are found on alder, birch, willow, and other
plants. It's a widely distributed species in Nova Scotia, but checking
Ferguson (1955) I see that at the time it hadn't been recorded in Cape
Breton. I'll check later today to see if we have any subsequent
specimens from CB, but in any event this is a good record. Can you let
me know the date and location of the specimen?

2008_0709wildlife0005 is the largest of our sphinx moths, the Big
Poplar Sphinx (Pachysphinx modesta (Harr.)). As the name indicates,
the larvae feed on poplar and willow. It is also a widespread species
in Nova Scotia with records north at least to Baddeck.

Cheers!

Chris
