--Boundary_(ID_5PEwFmtnHymYKzeLsoW8QQ) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT JUNE 24, 2008 - Today on "As It Happens" on CBC Radio, there was an interesting report on BALD EAGLES IN THE ASSINIBOINE ZOO IN WINNIPEG: Bob Wrigley reported that they have a reproducing pair of ELDERLY eagles there that go all the way back to 1973, when both of them got to the zoo as already in adult plumage (thus at least 5 years old, born in 1968 or earlier, thus at least 40 years old this year); in 1973 they were from two different provinces (Manitoba and ??) and needed rehabilitation (both were injured and unreleasable); a NINE- YEAR COURTSHIP ensued, after which they produced their first eaglets in 1983?; this year, 2008, they have remarkably produced their 22nd and 23rd youngsters, after a couple of years of no successful reproduction (3 or 4 years ago they had one youngster); both adults still look to be healthy and vital; their current ages of 40+ years can be compared with the maximum known longevity in captivity of 48 years, I believe, and up to 27 years for wild bald eagles; thus these two are pretty remarkable, it seems. I haven't yet tried to check on this via Googling or other Internet sources nor my books and articles. I'm wondering if anyone else also heard this radio report and can comment further on my notes or other relevant information?? Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. --Boundary_(ID_5PEwFmtnHymYKzeLsoW8QQ) Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><font = face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: 12.0px Helvetica"><b>JUNE = 24, 2008 </b>-=A0Today on "As It Happens" on CBC Radio, there was an = interesting report on <b>BALD EAGLES IN THE ASSINIBOINE ZOO IN = WINNIPEG</b>: Bob Wrigley reported that they have <b>a reproducing pair = of=A0 ELDERLY eagles</b> there that go all the way back to 1973, when = both of them got to the zoo as already in adult plumage (thus at least 5 = years old, born in 1968 or earlier, thus at least 40 years old this = year); in 1973 they were from two different provinces (Manitoba and ??) = and needed rehabilitation (both were injured and unreleasable); a = <b>NINE-YEAR COURTSHIP</b> ensued, after which they produced their first = eaglets in 1983?; this year, 2008, they have remarkably produced their = 22nd and 23rd youngsters, after a couple of years of no successful = reproduction (3 or 4 years ago they had one youngster); both adults = still look to be healthy and vital; their current ages of 40+ years can = be compared with the maximum known longevity in captivity of 48 years, I = believe, and up to 27 years for wild bald eagles; thus these two are = pretty remarkable, it seems.=A0 I haven't yet tried to check on this via = Googling or other Internet sources nor my books and = articles.</font></div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; = margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><br></div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; "><font face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: = 12.0px Helvetica">I'm wondering if anyone else also heard this radio = report and can comment further on my notes or other relevant = information??</font></div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: = 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><br></div><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px; "><font face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: = 12.0px Helvetica">Cheers from Jim in = Wolfville.=A0</font></div><div><br></div> </body></html>= --Boundary_(ID_5PEwFmtnHymYKzeLsoW8QQ)--
