Hi all:
=20
I made a venture this morning with a local person out to Gull Island. We d=
id not land as not to overly disturb the tern colony nesting there. The lo=
cal person had been concerned about people landing on the island when the t=
erns are nesting there. He has phoned local officials who have done nothin=
g about this nor has any signage been placed on the island. I told him tha=
t I would check the island out for the possibility of roseate terns being t=
here. This island might have been overlooked in regards to nesting terns i=
n the past, I'm not sure. Historically, the person who I was with told me=
that the terns have come there for 61 years, every year to nest. They co=
uld have been there longer than that though. He mentioned that last year f=
or whatever reason the population had been about 300 terns. That was the m=
ost he has ever seen there.

The island itself is at general co-ordinates, a bit off from it as I was no=
t on the island of NAD83 20 396656 4908363. It is an island about 100 feet=
long and is in Lower South Cove in Bayport. There are definitely roseate =
terns nesting on the island. I saw at least six birds, which would make up=
three pairs. I had good views of all six and one made the definitive cal=
l. There might be more though. With the numbers of birds present it was h=
ard to make an accurate count. I estimate the breakdown of the other tern=
s nesting there at 29 pairs of common terns and 18 pairs of artic terns. R=
oughly a little over 100 terns in total. I could be off on the estimate th=
ough, as again I did not set foot on the island.
