Roland, please send me the two photos, and I'll see what I can  
provide in the way of an identification?

There are at least two explanations: the bird is moulting (there  
comes a stage when the head is totally without feathers! showing the  
very dark skin and looking really weird!); OR the crest, being to  
some extent controllable by muscles at the bases of the feathers,  
perhaps has just been lowered and "hidden" by the bird?  Other  
possibilities?
