One of the very interesting side-effects of participating in a BIGBY that has been remarked upon in the Montreal area, is that participants who would normally be travelling to various, known 'birding' locations have discovered just how many interesting birds they have been overlooking within walking distance of their homes because they rarely spent much time birding close to home. Neutral carbon footprint, learn more about the birds in your home area and get exercise. It's a winning situation all around from my perspective. All the best, Lance =========================== Lance Laviolette Glen Robertson, Ontario lance.laviolette@lmco.com =========================== ________________________________ From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Richard Stern Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:24 AM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Re: Green birding Hi, Perhaps, to promote it, people could have a friendly competition like last year's Yard List one - who can see the most species in NS over 1 year (say Jan 1 - Dec 31) counting only birds seen as in Joan's e-mail below. BIGBY : Big Green Big Year is for birders who are trying to go carbon neutral. You count birds only while walking, biking or working in your yard this year. Taking public transit to a local spot is a special category. This is hard on a lister like me, but I am working towards it. I can bird in my Halifax neighbourhood ( Point Pleasant Park is a healthy walk) but I have to drive to get to my summer place in Port Greville. Once there I can walk to my favourite birding spots, and even cover a square for the atlas. I was up before 5 am last Sunday and walked until after 8am. I was pleased to find Spruce Grouse, Veery, Swainson's Thrush and Robin, Merlin, Nighthawk, both Vireos, Alder Flycatchers, Song, White-throated and Vesper Sparrows, Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Chestnut-sided, Black and White, Redstart and Yellow warblers within six km of home. Green birding is a good idea that seems to be catching on world wide.
