Randy:

Last week on Brown's Mountain I had two encounters with black bears
including a close encounter with a mother and cub. This is an area where
last year I frequently found bear sign but no sightings. Both encounters
were mid to late morning which contradicts the literature indicating that
twilight hours are the most likely time for unexpected encounters. Thus the
change might not only be in numbers but in behaviour. Increasing habitat
infringement is another possible explanation.

Subject: [NatureNS] black bear sightings

I heard on the radio this morning that black bears are being sighted
frequently this year...I wonder if there really is a difference, or is this
something said every year? Personally, I have seen four this year, well
above my average of about one. Two have been from my vehicle, one whilst
deep in the woods (I think I posted about that one), and on Saturday, one
in my yard. Please see: http://people.stfx.ca/rlauff/personel/recent2.html
