Catbirds do often act "shy and elusive," but that it only one side of
their personality. They are also bright-eye and alert, and
inquisitive. Furthermore, they can be tamed enough to approach
closely if food is offered. They especially like raisins. My mother,
who always seemed to inspire confidence in birds, had them eating out
of her hand.
