Last week up to yesterday was the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed at any of my feeders. I had two unknowns, one which we decided to be a thrush, although which I am unsure, it had the colouring of a fox sparrow in places on its sides and/or wings. Not a good description, I know. Then there was the other bird I am nearly positive was a veery. While I was trying to get a good look at that bird, another bird flew in and I haven't a clue what that was. Closest I can come to was a Greenland wheatear (as shown in my old copy by Roger Tory Peterson). Honestly I cannot say that is what it was. While I was looking through the four books I have trying to find the thrush I glanced up to see markings, (it was just about an hour before dark) and there was an indigo bunting male in gorgeous regalia, amongst a whole horde of junco and possible other buntings (not roaring blue though). To top that off, I began to think this was a test of some sort I had a female cardinal. I am feeling the books were throwing birds at me for identification. So today we have two sets of tree swallows trying to take over the nesting box out front, a barn swallow flying in and out the barn and the usual: juncos, chickadees, bluejays, way too many grackles, redwinged blackbirds, male and female, still a few starlings, robins and a Sharpshinned Hawk that took a bluejay just as I opened the curtains this morning about dawn. A couple song sparrows, a couple white-throat sparrows; the white-crowned Sparrows have all moved on from the look of things, and mourning doves everywhere, and just now a nursing squirrel plunked herself done on the feeder. Can't trap her out for obvious reasons. All in all, a very quiet feeder. Friday evening we had a large mixed group of warblers land in the trees all chittering and by morning they had moved on. Thankfully. I can't spare any more time looking up birds! I have things that just have to get done :?)) I was pleased to hear someone saw Chimney swifts. Did any come back to Wolfville, does anyone know? Oh! we have a couple male RT hummingbirds, coming to the feeders sporadically, and I thought I saw a good large female but no sign the past day or so.
