April 27, 2008 - NSBS/BNS FIELD TRIP FOR WOLFVILLE-AREA BIRDS -- led
by myself --

At Lower Canard, we stopped at the Muskrat Farm Marsh to view the
new, replacement BALD EAGLE NEST, and were delighted to see 2 tiny
downy EAGLETS with the adult; the other parent landed nearby while we
watched.

Fred Thomas Road (Canard area): the large manure pile had 3 immature
bald eagles and 10+ ravens (latter probably non-breeding yearlings);
nearby were 500+ mixed gulls, but no detectable lesser black-backed
gull among them.
-------------------------
I checked a couple more BALD EAGLE NESTS by myself. The Noggins Farm
Market nest at Greenwich shows at least one tiny EAGLET (like
Canard), and, while I watched the female? feeding it, the male? flew
in and landed with a foot-full of grassy-looking nest-lining material).

At new BALD EAGLE NEST at the west end of Wolfville, I was unable to
detect the presence of an adult (but viewing this one is very
difficult, and I will continue to watch it from time to time -- we
think this is from a pair that is nesting for the first time, and
thus is well behind in timing behind the "pros".
-------------------------
Apr. 28, 2008 - I checked two local BALD EAGLE NESTS: (a) the one
east of Wolfville at Eye Rd. had an adult eagle on it, AND at least 3
SMALL BIRDS associated with the nest sides (house sparrows,
probably); and (b) the new nest at Landmark East School in
westernmost Wolfville -- checks from the farm markets and on foot
failed to detect an adult at/on the nest (although there is no
adequate viewing spot).

Apr. 29, 2008 - Again in late afternoon I checked the NEW BALD EAGLE
NEST at Landmark East school in west Wolfville, and this time BOTH
ADULTS were together on the nest; and this time I viewed it from my
car on Main St. facing east and looking steeply upward, via a small
opening in the top foliage of the tree.

Kay Stirling called from Wallbrook (west of Gaspereau & Melanson) and
wonders where is the pair of BALD EAGLES that should be attending the
nest on their land south of their house along the ravine? Lately she
has been seeing no adult eagles near the nest. I checked the site
myself on May 1st, and there were no eagles seen there at all. I
told Kay that perhaps one of this year's pair of adults is young, and
maybe they just have to wait a year for fertility/maturity?

May 5, 2008 - Starr's Point BALD EAGLE NEST: both adults were on the
nest and acting as if youngsters were present.

At the same farm (Chris Cox's), the metal grain elevator has a large
and occupied RAVEN NEST, and both adults were present -- I couldn't
tell whether large young were present (but probably yes?).

I checked the RAVEN NEST in the small woodlot of planted pines
(Norway?) just north of the Acadia Arena and along the railroad
tracks. I found a good viewing area from a dump just east of the
pines, and there are at least 4 large nestlings in the nest. I
couldn't tell how close they are getting to fledging, but they
appeared to have feathered-out long wings.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
