I've had my eyes peeled for them the last few weeks when I've been on =
the water, and yesterday I finally saw my first spring turtle. I saw it =
while I was on the BNS canoe trip to Cloud Lake Wilderness Area =
yesterday. It was a good sized EASTERN PAINTED TURTLE sunning itself on =
a log mid-afternoon. He stayed put as we coasted past. Finally in the =
sun, it wasn't moving unless it absolutely had to. The rest of the boats =
had passed this point already, but my lollygagging paid off.

It was a nice trip. Cool in the morning until the sun came out after =
lunch. We more or less did a clockwise wander round the lake, with a =
nice break for lunch and a quick wander over the portage trail to shake =
out our legs. If I remember right, there were thirteen of us in five =
canoes and two kayaks. Gary (my bowman) and I plunked our 12- and =
14-year-old sons in a canoe of their own and they kept up with the pack =
just fine. They've spent a lot of their lives in the bows of canoes, but =
this was the first time they'd had command of their own craft all day. =
Makes me grin.

Featured entertainers were a pair of LOONS, many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, =
SONG SPARROWS, a pair (m&f) of COMMON MERGANSERS, a YELLOW-BELLIED =
SAPSUCKER, and many of the usual suspects. Patrick Kelly could give you =
a better birding report than I can, as he spent most of the trip =
reclined amidship in his canoe Atlasing while his two female shipmates =
conveyed him gently down the stream and all that good stuff. Good work =
if you can get it.

On the ground, MAYFLOWERS and PICTURE PLANTS were of particular interest =
to the group, though I get a kick out of ROCK TRIPE, personally, and =
Gary was taken with some nice stands of red pine and some classic-shaped =
black spruce trees.

I spend a lot of time in the woods alone, but it's nice to share a day =
abroad with others once in a while.
