Dear All, Apr 28, 2008 I forgot to mention that I also saw a Bumble Bee today (Bombus ternarius perhaps; rufous near base of abdomen) in the woods about a kilometer from the nearest house i.e. potential source of nectar or pollen on which Bees are supposed to be dependent. Populus catkins, now out, have pollen but as I recall don't have nectar. About 100 paces from the Bee is a woody swamp that runs along either side of a small brook. The Willows there would furnish both pollen and nectar. And there are Alder bushes in the swamp area and scattered Hazelnut elsewhere. I am wondering if Bees, if hard pressed, can use pollen from (wind pollinated ?) plants like Populus, Alnus and Corylus. Or Protozoan soup from tree cavity water. Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
