Hi Heather,
You may find this site interesting;
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/AltitudeComparisons.html

I don't know the answer to your first two questions but regarding =
migrating at night....this is very common, in fact the vast majority of =
migration goes on at night.
A very detailed and fascinating study of bird migration [ close to 400 =
pages long ] is the book " Living On The Wind" by Scott Weidensaul"

  Subject: [NatureNS] migration altitude question

  The son of a friend of mine was flying, not solo yet, and he and the=20
  instructor found themselves headed into a flock of white birds at an=20
  altitude of 3,000 feet. They dove to try and keep the damage to =
minimum,=20
  which they did. They survived.
  The question is - do different species of birds fly at different =
altitudes=20
  when migrating? Is it always the same or what determines it?
  The next burning question is - do birds migrate at night in huge =
flocks?
  Hope someone can answer these questions... Heather D.
