I was at Broad Cove this afternoon and saw my first yellow-rumped warbler a=
s a returning spring migrant there. I also heard a few others vocalizing. =
I've been listening to my bird vocal cd's and have been trying to refresh =
myself on some calls. I guess I'm still rusty as happens every spring. I =
was trout fishing when I heard a few vocalizations that I could not place. =
The dower news is that the place I was fishing at,where I always catch fis=
h during the first part of the season and also see smaller fish which I eit=
her release or do not bother with. I've never gone to the place without ca=
tching at least a couple of trout and seeing many smaller trout which I sus=
pected would grow to the size acceptable for the frying pan. I do not take=
any fish under eight inches. I also do not pound the places that I fish, =
but go once during the season and then it is to other spots. =20

A few years ago they clear cut and removed large tracts of trees along the =
brook and some siltation occured. As the years went on it was harder to fi=
nd trout and I had to trudge further. So the places I've gone to fish requ=
ire hip boots and bush wacking to access. Not an easy place for most peopl=
e to go. I'm puzzled as I did not see a single trout anywheres that I trad=
itionally go. No larger fish and also no smaller ones. The brook was the =
lowest I've seen it, so maybe it froze to the bottom and killed off all of =
the trout over the winter or maybe the ph level dropped to kill the fish as=
last year there were still a lot around. Maybe someone fished it out. I =
don't know. All I know is that I've gone out fishing to two of my best pl=
aces that never let me down and I've not seen a single fish. I've found th=
at it is now harder and harder to find trout in brooks and when I do I have=
to be careful that no one sees me or look out. The next thing one turns a=
round and there are tons of people fishing the places and before you know i=
t not a fish is left. Also, I'm seeing more and more productive brooks sil=
tated and destroyed. Brooks which once had trout in every nook and cranny =
now have none due to logging practices and weak legislation. Oh well until=
we get a responsible leader in there things will only get worse. Anyhow, =
thats my two cents and we'll see what the rest of the season brings. On th=
e plus side there were water striders and other insects about. On the down=
side, I heard my first mosquito. On the plus side, more leopard frogs sno=
ring and I saw one today.
