at sunset if you walk along the train tracks that hug sydney harbour you no=
tice both crows and ravens flocking north along the shore. the crows often =
stop in different size groups (4 - >40) in the trees, its a great time to w=
atch crow behaviour. but the ravens pass over and rarely stop; they're head=
ing to the tar ponds at the north end of sydney. every night (that i have l=
ooked in the past few years living here) ravens show up in smaller groups a=
nd circle, dive and call above the slag piles in great numbers. they're ver=
y entertaining flyers and they look like they're having a great time. they =
can get pretty loud too. i have no idea what goes on once the sun goes down=

Come to the Grand Pre dykelands or the Canning/Canard area at certain times=
of the year to see ravens in substantial flocks, which consist of the unma=
ted birds in their first and second? years. On Sat. Apr. 19 just northeast=
of the former Maple Leaf/Canard Poultry processing plant, along Fred Thoma=
s Road, there were perhaps 40-50 near the large manure pile at the edge of =
the woods. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

A neighbour of ours took a walk on the Pockwock roads off the Mt. Uniacke =
exit of Hwy. 101 last night (Apr.17) and heard Hermit Thrushes singing ever=
ywhere!
We've had a returning pair of Purple Finch the past few days, a female Cowb=
ird on Apr. 16, N. Flicker returned Apr. 11, Fox Sparrow last heard on Apr=
. 13, still a few Comm. Redpolls.
Saw an interesting flight of 24 Ravens the morning of Apr. 12, a scattered =
flock heading South, passing over our house! Never saw more than 4 or 5 ra=
vens together before. I'm pretty sure they were Ravens, not Crows, as I no=
ticed the wedge tails and the hefty appearance of the 'shoulders'. Wonder =
what they were up to.
