I was out for a quick morning paddle at one of my usual haunts today -- on the Gaspereau River at White Rock -- and saw a BELTED KINGFISHER in a pool just above the bridge. First kingfisher I've seen this year, and the first I've seen on that stretch of water. Also, a pair of WOOD DUCKS and several BLACK DUCKS are still hanging around the head pond, along with the usual suspects flittering and singing in trees. Saw GRACKLES here for the first time this season, too. On the weekend, I was up in Amherst and Jolicure, NB, playing carpenter. I was framing-up walls in Jolicure all day Friday with a friend who is building a studio on a property that was once owned by the poet John Thompson. I saw DARK-EYED JUNCOS, RW BLACKBIRDS, and heard SONG SPARROWS singing, CAN GEESE honking, and PHEASANTS croaking. There were also a M&F pair of WIDGEON ducks on Jolicure Pond. Later, as I was driving across the storied High Marsh Road, a beautiful SHARP-SHINNED HAWK dipped and wheeled on the road right in front of me, fanning out its wings and tail as it dropped, turned and climbed again. Wow! I pulled over and watched him continue to hunt on the marsh for some time. Driving back to the valley late Saturday night, the moon was so big and bright that I spotted a big owl hunting over a field near South Maitland. I pulled over and watched it until it disappeared into the night. I tried a barred owl call but got no reply. Andrew Steeves Wolfville, NS
