Sable Island horses have a huge fan

Photographer Roberto Dutesco journeys from the concrete canyons of =20
Manhattan to the isolation of Sable Island in the documentary Chasing =20=
Wild Horses, airing 9 p.m. tonight on Bravo. (ROBERTO DUTESCO)
ROBERTO DUTESCO lives something of a dual life.
Professionally, he appears to have a very successful career as a =20
fashion and celebrity photographer with his work appearing regularly =20
in glossy doorstoppers such as Vogue and Vanity Fair.
On the other hand, he has his own gallery in New York City to exhibit =20=
and sell his large-scale art prints.
Geographically, he bases himself out of the media centre and ultimate =20=
urban jungle of Manhattan. But it=92s a far more desolate island that=92s =
=20
stolen his heart.
Chasing Wild Horses, airing tonight at 9 p.m. on Bravo, is a =20
startlingly beautiful documentary from Arcadia Entertainment of =20
Halifax about Dutesco=92s fascination with the horses of Sable Island.
It follows him from the airport in Halifax to the narrow strip of =20
sand and grass about 300 kilometres from Nova Scotia. It=92s a return =20=
trip that follows 10 years after his initial exposure to the stark =20
beauty of Sable.
Dutesco is understandably fascinated by the wild horses that dot the =20
unique landscape there. The site is well-known as the location of =20
hundreds of shipwrecks over the last few centuries. Some of those =20
ships evidently carried horses. Their descendents are the wild =20
creatures that go about their business with only the handful of =20
researchers on the island representing the possibility of any =20
interaction with humans.
The filmmakers allow Dutesco to tell his story in his own words but =20
there are passages in Chasing Wild Horses that rightfully don=92t =20
require any additional description. (If you don=92t have a widescreen =20=
set, you may start to consider it after watching this.)
Phil Sedore=92s score, comprised mostly of dreamily atmospheric solo =20
guitar pieces, appropriately sets off the stunning visuals.
The photographer says there are about 300 horses on Sable and he =20
evidently has cultivated relationships with some of them. At first, =20
he=92s shown keeping a respectful distance from the majestic animals, =20=
capturing their images through enormous lenses. As he gets closer he =20
starts talking. At first, he=92s sort of talking to himself. Then you =20=
realize he=92s beginning to cajole the horses to pose just as he would =20=
a model.
Dutesco notes in Chasing Wild Horses that Sable Island is roughly the =20=
same length as Manhattan though it=92s only about as wide as Central =20
Park, the famously designed natural oasis in the heart of the city. =20
It must be those kinds of similarities within his parallel worlds =20
that allow him to feel as comfortable in the middle of nowhere as he =20
does in the centre of the universe.

=95The Juno Awards, 9 p.m., CTV, ASN. It=92s Calgary=92s turn to stage =
the =20
annual music bash. Comic Russell Peters hosts and scheduled =20
performers run the gamut from Anne Murray and Avril Lavigne to =20
Michael Bubl=E9 and Measha Brueggergosman.
=95MythBusters, 9 p.m., Discovery. The science jokers go back to their =20=
special effects roots with two hours dedicated to deconstructing some =20=
of the more outlandish happenings in James Bond movies.
