Just back after three months in the sun. Unusually high temperatures and
serious drought problems in much of the South. We were out to Lake Okechobee and
noted that many marinas and docks are completely dried out and all the
Eastern counties of Florida are on restricted watering. Lots of birding but there
seems to be a significant and steady decrease in the smaller song birds in
the coastal areas. I suspect development and mosquito spraying have a lot to do
with it. Lots of shore and wading birds as well as Sandhill Cranes. The
cranes seem to adapt well to civilization and become quite tame. We also noted
more wild Turkey along the highways this year than in previous years. There are
huge numbers of Buzzards and lots of Black Vultures who dine well on the
enormous waste sites as well as road kill. I was able to rescue a couple of
Gopher tortoises before they became road kill. Spent one day with a Grandson at
Disney World, a very bird friendly place. At different venues were several
species including egret, ibis, herons, and Anhingas as well as smaller birds.
The Indian River Lagoon still flourishes, very good fishing and significant
numbers of dolphins and Manatees. The Manatees once again chose our Marina for
mating this year. Glad to be back but wish it was warmer.
