Hi Nelson,

The hornets would be one of the species of yellow jacket (Vespula
spp.). They are attracted to decomposing matter of all sorts so a
composter could be a real magnet. This past summer I was along the
waterfront in Pictou where all the garbage bins (which contained
various food items discarded by tourists) were attracting large
numbers of yellow jackets. I gather these were proving to be a real
nuisance since wasp traps had been placed adjacent to many of these
bins. If they are a problem for your friend I would recommend one of
these. I think you can get these from many gardening or hardware
stores. There are some, such as:

http://www.nothingbuthardware.com/737807.html

Which allow you to convert any soda bottle into a wasp trap and cost
relatively little.

Best wishes,

Chris
