They are attracted to decomposing matter of all sorts so a composter could be a real magnet. This past summer I was along the waterfront in Pictou where all the garbage bins (which contained various food items discarded by tourists) were attracting large numbers of yellow jackets. I gather these were proving to be a real nuisance since wasp traps had been placed adjacent to many of these bins. If they are a problem for your friend I would recommend one of these. I think you can get these from many gardening or hardware stores. There are some, such as: http://www.nothingbuthardware.com/737807.html Which allow you to convert any soda bottle into a wasp trap and cost relatively little. Best wishes, Chris On Mar 26, 2008, at 8:19 PM, Nelson Poirier wrote: > I have had a request from a person with a composter indicating she > has had a real problem with hornets in the summer going in and out > of her black plastic composter via the air vents and wondering how > to handle this situation so she can use her composter. > > I am not sure what specie of hornet is involved. > > Has anyone had experience with this that can offer suggestions? > > Nelson Poirier > > nelson@nb.sympatico.ca Christopher Majka Nova Scotia Museum, 1747 Summer St., Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3A6 c.majka@ns.sympatico.ca --Apple-Mail-95-637691529 Content-Type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; ">Hi Nelson,<div><br = class=3D"webkit-block-placeholder"></div><div>The hornets would be one = of the species of yellow jacket (<i>Vespula</i> spp.).
