We need an individual who would be=20 willing to live on Bon Portage Island (southwest=20 Nova Scotia) for an entire month and conduct our=20 daily census (1 hour bird survey starting 1 hour=20 after sunrise). We are primarily interested in=20 the migratory patterns of passerines and ideally,=20 the individual would need to know how to identify=20 passerines by sight and sound. The island is a=20 fabulous spot to bird during migration, has a=20 breeding colony of over 50,000 pairs of Leach=92s=20 Storm Petrels and is well known locally due to=20 Evelyn Richardson=92s book We Keep A Light. We are able to cover travel expenses, food and=20 lodging (within reason =96 caviar is not a staple),=20 plus pay for your time. Individuals will stay in=20 a rustic cabin with basic comforts (wood stove,=20 kerosene lamps, coleman cookstove). There is an=20 island care taker who oversees activities on the=20 island, (e.g., boat crossings, general upkeep of=20 facilities) and there will be other researchers=20 on the island from time to time, so you will not=20 be completely isolated for an entire month. Another option is to have several individuals=20 participate for shorter durations (e.g., week long periods). The spring season can be quite warm and=20 beautiful, but typically it is characterized by=20 fog, storms (which can prevent boat crossings for=20 several days), rain, cold and dampness. The=20 island is also quite rugged (cobble rocks are=20 hard to walk on), so the individual would need to be relatively fit. If anyone is interested in this position, please=20 contact Trina Fitzgerald immediately at trina.fitzgerald@acadiau.ca Thanks for considering this opportunity - Trina ___________________________________________________________________ Forwarded by: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------= - Blake Maybank maybank@ns.sympatico.ca Editor, "Nova Scotia Birds" author, "Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS.htm White's Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada=20 --=====================_120089609==.ALT Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-E666DEC Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

I'm forwarding the following message on behalf of Trina Fitzgerald.

_________________________________________________________

The Atlantic Bird Observatory is seeking help during the upcoming spring migration season (May 1-31st, 2008).
