My apologies.

My "Birds and plants would in general not be affected by modern
herbicides (as opposed to some crude early ones such as arsenates,
sulfuric acid, varsol & perchlorates)." was intended to read-

Birds and mammals would in general not be affected by modern
herbicides (as opposed to some crude early ones such as arsenates,
sulfuric acid, varsol & perchlorates).

Starting a sentence one way and finishing it another way can generate 
such pitfalls. And just did.
