Not that we will see it but some penguins might. I just thought you would enjoy knowing that such an event is taking place. At about 11:31p.m.AST, the New Moon will be centred on the Sun for about two minutes, in alignment between Antarctica and the Sun, New Zealanders will see about 60 percent of the Sun covered by the Moon. This link will give you a page of info with a google map showing the track relative to Antarctica. If it is not highlighted, then copy and paste into the URL window. http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2008Feb07Agoogle.html This event announces the Total Lunar Eclipse that will follow in 2 weeks time, on the February Full Moon. We will see that one the night of FEBRUARY 20th More on that later. Sherman
