The location of the bird (in a larch with needles) did give me  
growing doubt about my first impression. Later, noting the forked  
tail, mentioned by Andy, ruled out the Fox Sparrow.  I'm inclined to  
agree with him. His points in favour of "a female, or immature purple  
finch"  are well taken.  Thanks Andy.
