5 January 2007 -- Holman Marsh Lake trail, HRM

Martine and I walked the 5 km to Holman Marsh Lake along the
unofficial ATV trail system that leads off our subdivision in White's
Lake. A beautiful day, with the snow firm underfoot, but slippery at times.

But the woods were quiet. I've never before done this hike in
winter without seeing woodpeckers -- we saw and heard none
today. We managed 15 Black-capped Chickadees in four groups, 6
Boreal Chickadees in two groups, and a flock of 7 Pine Grosbeaks that
dropped down to investigate when I pished in some chickadees. There
was but a single Golden-crowned Kinglet, and a few ravens rounded out the list.

There were incredible numbers of Snowshoe Hare footprints, and also
those of many deer, but not a single grouse track.

Cheers,
