This note is from Pol Vincter, who recently had a very tame male ruffed grouse in the area around his home at Mount Denson, Hants County, for over two years, so that he could watch the antics of this cock daily as he grew up from juvenile to adult and beyond. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville ---------- From: polvincter@eastlink.ca Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2007 19:06:58 -0400 To: jimwolford@eastlink.ca Subject: weird pheasant behaviour is normal, from pol My experience has been that both pheasants and [ruffed] grouse when encountering a new female, immediately want to recruit her into the harem. Circles around her are to control her movements, and pretending to forage means: '' SEE, if you stay with me, i'll find you lots of food, I am a good [potential mate] after all!'' Pol. All normal male behaviour, like approaching a new female at the bar, no matter what time of year!
