It will be some time before I get final numbers, but it was a ver= y good day, and we had 63 species at the compiling session, with some to be= checked, and most feeder reports still to come. Highlights included remar= kable numbers of northern birds, including Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Shr= ikes, Snow Buntings, and the winter finches, an excellent variety of our re= gular coastal species, and local winter rarities such as Harlequin Duck, Bl= ack-legged Kittiwake, Razorbill, Belted Kingfisher, Pine Warbler, and Hoary= Redpoll. Total number of observers (one of the best measures of a count's= success) will be close to last year's 116. Special thanks to Barb & Pat G= iffin for hosting the compilation social (any suggestions for a better name= for it?). =20 Thanks to all feeder observers who have reported your summaries by e-mai= l, telephone, or through notes delivered to the compiling session. I shall= be replying individually as time permits, but, unless you are mailing them= to me, delivering them or dropping them in my mailbox, please keep your re= ports in a safe place intil I get around to pick them up. I should get mos= t of them within a week, but will try to avoid bothering anyone on Christm= as Eve or Christmas Day. Feel to contact me on those days if you wish. =20 Special thanks to all who read the instructions carefully and completed t= he report forms and rare bird reports accordingly. That makes the task of = compiler much easier and ensures that we have a good archive of information= that may be of value not only in planning future counts, but in any studie= s of local bird populations. Also special thanks to those observers from o= utside the count area who contributed their own time and travel costs to he= lp give us very good field coverage. The weather co-operated, and everyon= e seems to have enjoyed the day. Best wishes of the season, =20 Wayne Neily Tremont, Kings Co., Nova Scotia Compiler Kingston Christmas Bird Count"Beauty is truth, and truth beauty," - John Ke= ats, 1820.=20 _________________________________________________________________ Exercise your brain!
