The weather didn't hit here until about 4:00, characterized by snow and some
wind. We had a largely pleasant, albeit cloudy day.

May got the first good bird of the day, a Great Blue Heron which I walked
right past. This species has only occurred five other times (out of the 31
runs of the Antigonish CBC). At one home with a particularly good feeder set
up, I noted two RB Nuthatches, then May said she thought there was a Creeper
in one of the trees (where I had just seen one of the Nuthatches). My
expectations were not high, but there it was, a Brown Creeper (only recorded
10 other times on our count, never by me that I can recall). At Bayfield, we
were on the beach (sure is nice walking on frozen sand, by the way), a
dominantly-white bird came in from behind us; my first impression and
expectation was a Snow Bunting, but when it landed about 20 m away, it then
started to run down the beach - a Sanderling! Brand new for our count!

Pine Grosbeaks were everywhere, though I suspect we're not going to match
out 1999 numbers. Red-tails and Song Sparrows were also high for us.

Randy
