Hi there, Jean Hartley and I went for a walk around the Frog Pond at Fleming Park in HRM during the afternoon today (Saturday). The flurries had stopped but the wind was cold, and ice was forming in the side streams, though not on the pond itself. A couple of weeks ago Jean had seen a huge flock (100 +) of Robins feeding on the abundant Canada Holly berries there, but we saw no Robins at the Frog Pond today. However they left lots of berries; in fact we were surprised to see that so many remained. I was hoping to see Bohemian Waxwings taking advantage of them, but no luck today. Since there were very few birds around the pond (mostly Mourning Doves, Chickadees, Juncos, and Black Ducks), we took a side trail down towards the Northwest Arm, and walked around the Jollimore neighbourhood. Dorothy Jackson on McManus told us that the last of the Cardinals had disappeared from there. Up on Kirk, we saw three Robins in a big Flowering Crab with small amber-coloured fruits (Siberian Flowering Crab, perhaps?). We were delighted to see a lovely bright Yellow-breasted Chat lurking in a red-berried Euonymous shrub in front of a yellow house (# 11, I think) which is two doors south of Fred Greig's place. We also heard White-breasted Nuthatches here. On our way back we ran into Susan Hunt, who told us that the female Red-bellied Woodpecker is still visiting her feeder on Westgate Avenue. It has been there for over five weeks now. There are still some Purple-stemmed Asters and Yarrow in bloom, although I had to look hard for even them! Cheers, Patricia L. Chalmers Halifax
