Just made it out to the 2nd bridge (from the Bisset Rd trail head). Out of place seemed a single male Surf Scooter I spotted on the rainbow heaven side of the trail just before the first bridge. Tide was close to high when I was out, not the best timing. In the distance a good number of gulls, with the scope bouncing in the wind I Ided Herring, Ring-billed, Greater Blackbacked, few Blackheaded/Bonaparts. The later two species put on a show in the current at the 2nd bridge, nice for close-up comparison (6 Bonnies, 2 BH). Far out there were also two flocks of shorebirds, total ~300-400 individuals. Mostly dunlins, with a few smaller peeps mixed in. One Yellowleg and a larger longbilled shorebirds (possibly a godwit of some sort) were the other two shorebird species seen. Better timing will sure produce a bit more variety. At one point I counted six perched adult Bald Eagles in a single scope sweep, no imm. with them. The trail is in decent shape after the recent storm -at least for walking-, hope they will fix a few spots before the gravel gets washed out by rain. I did a brief run down Grand Desert, where the only noteworthy sighting was a pair of Buffleheads. Ulli --------------------------------- Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo!
