This morning our flock of Orioles had a visitor. A Juv. N. Shrike chased = and appeared to have a go at eveyone of the Orioles untill one of the = imm (m) Balt. reversed the tables and gave chase to the Shrike. There = was a bit of a stand off then the Shrike was chased from the yard by the = very very agressive (m) Oriole. I'm not sure what the total # of orioles is today but I did get one = count yesterday morning of 15 Balt and at that time 1 of the adult males = was missing and so to was the Bullocks. Terri had a max count of 16 less = the Bullocks. So we had no less than 17 Oriols yesterday. Todays = activity indicates that the # is still the same or (I hope not) larger. I've dug out an old broken Oriole feeder, made some repairs and hung it = out last evening before dark. So far today they've drank over 2 cups of = humming bird food from it (and there's still 2 hours of feeding left and = part of that is their large last meal before dark). Due to the Oriole = feeder there seem to be a bit less of a frenzy when I replenish the = grapes. The're not as starving because the Oriole feeder seems to keep = the edge off. My QUESTION is what would be the best "food" to fill the Oriole feeder = with? I don't think the humming bird food is the best and I know that = the home made sugar water solution is even worse (false food). I've = thought of trying a grape juice but I was wondering if anyone knows of a = better mix. Tom K.
