I recently attended a presentation by Brian Jollymore and Phil Zamora (Retd)
from DFO and was pleasantly surprised and pleased to find that there is an
active plan being executed with involvement from Minas Basin Group (owners
of 2 dams on the river) and DFO staff from BIO to re-establish a run of
Inner Bay of Fundy (iBoF) salmon on the Halfway River just east of
Hantsport, using hatchlings from nearby and relatively healthy Gaspereau
River broodstock.

I believe they feel the two systems share similar features - topology,
hydrology and whatnot - (no expert me!) such that it would significantly
enhance the probability of success for this undertaking.

The DFO folks seemed quite optimistic that when the manmade obstacles - 2
30-40 foot dams, one an ogee - were overcome the habitat was highly
suitable. They were quite excited and optimistic of the prospects. Very
cool.

Good news for this devastated stock and cheers to Minas Basin Inc for
co-operating in a very material way. I walked out to the 'Front' dam last
week - the first on the river - and a large concrete structure which I
believe is the base of a dam bypass/ladder is already in place.
