They are found from western New England to Manitoba south into the drainage systems of the Tennessee and Missouri Rivers. In Nova Scotia, however, we do have red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens), which are aquatic salamanders. They are considerably smaller than mudpuppies (< 5" vs. < 17") and don't have the conspicuous external gills of mudpuppies, but they are found in lakes and ponds and do look superficially similar.
