Hi Nellie,

Mudpuppies (Necturus maculosus) do not occur in the Maritime
Provinces. They are found from western New England to Manitoba south
into the drainage systems of the Tennessee and Missouri Rivers. In
Nova Scotia, however, we do have red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus
viridescens), which are aquatic salamanders. They are considerably
smaller than mudpuppies (< 5" vs. < 17") and don't have the
conspicuous external gills of mudpuppies, but they are found in lakes
and ponds and do look superficially similar.

Cheers!

Chris
